Description
Originally built in 1893, Christ Church Cathedral is home to the oldest Christian congregation in Houston. In the 1990s, Linbeck was entrusted with refurbishing the landmark cathedral, expanding their Guild Hall, and building a new education building. Because the cathedral had undergone a series of renovations and enhancements since its original construction, Linbeck needed to identify and match the various techniques used over the years. For the chapel, Linbeck carefully dissembled every piece of travertine and numbered, stored, and reassembled every piece in the new building. To accommodate the expansion of Guild Hall, Linbeck removed the second floor and load bearing masonry walls. And to restore brick that had been damaged by the demolition of a garage, Linbeck provided significant masonry reconstruction at the exterior of the cathedral, reversing and re-grouting every brick back into place.
