Description

The North Garage Expansion was part of an overall campus expansion for Cook Children’s Medical Center. The original North Garage, built by Linbeck in 2001, was a four-level parking structure designed with the capability for a two-level vertical expansion. The North Garage expansion included an increase in the parking capacity, helistops, and a new loading dock. Expansion on Levels 2-6 allowed for increased parking on each level by tying into existing garages. Above Level 6, there are two helipads, consisting of structural steel frames supporting a specialty shape aluminum decking plank system. Each pad is capable of landing up to a 12,000-pound helicopter with a 44-foot rotor diameter. Due to flight arrival and take-off paths, the pads were required to be located at the far north end of the garage. To route patients to the hospital, the two pads connect to an elevated walkway that leads to an elevator tower specifically designed to accommodate patients on stretchers.
